BSL Curriculum
Mildmay Primary School’s BSL Curriculum
In September 2023 we launched our own BSL curriculum designed to meet communication needs within our school and support the whole school community to learn BSL from the start and throughout their time at Mildmay Primary School.
Already in its second year, the curriculum will grow year on year to create a seven-year progressive programme from reception to year six.
We have also created an Early Years curriculum specifically for use within Little Robins nursery to support our youngest learners to learn BSL.
Here is a sample overview of the signs being learned in school:
Term 1 | Term 2 | Term 3 | |
Nursery | I can sign the alphabet | I can sign colours | I can sign numbers 1-10 |
Reception (Stage 1) | I can understand basic classroom instructions | I can communicate basic feelings and emotions | I can communicate signs linked to school subjects |
Years 1-6 (Stage 2) | I can describe the weather | I can describe how people travel to school |
Within the PowerPoints, there are videos to demonstrate the sign to the children. This is filmed both head on and with a side profile, to support the learning of directional signs. The videos also allow facial expression and body language to be modelled as well. Below is an example of one of these videos.
