“Growing, Caring and Learning Together”

Deaf Studies

Deaf studies at Mildmay Primary School

Our Deaf Studies curriculum has been researched, written and is taught by our Deaf Mentor with the central aim of instilling an ‘I am Deaf and I can …’ attitude.  We want our deaf children to understand and feel proud of their identity, build resilience and self-advocation for a life-long mindset to take them into secondary school and beyond.

We believe secure SEMH foundations will not only support academic progress but support children through phases of their life and into adulthood.

Our deaf children are taught with knowledge and understanding of four core units:

  • Communication and Communication Technology
  • Deaf Identity
  • Deaf History
  • Deaf Culture and Community

With this knowledge, children are able to develop a greater understanding of their deafness and support needed in a variety of environments; they are encouraged to take ownership and make their own choices regarding identity and method of communication, for example.
