Year Five

SPRING TERM

We have had yet another jam packed term in P5. We began January by reading the wonderful Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. This is a book about a boy who gets marooned on a desert island, has adventures and meets a mysterious old Japanese man. We had the chance to interview a real life adventure enthusiast on Zoom. Martin Grove (Mrs Chomiak's brother) has travelled all over the world, climbed mountains, hiked huge distances and was even caught up in the tsunami 20 years ago.

We wrote our own amazing endings to the book and studied the world famous art work of Hokusai - The Great Wave, and created our own version using pencils and watercolours.

Hokusai

Recently, we had the chance to get close to Alpacas, minibeasts and owls! We learnt lots of facts about them and how they survive.

We have also had the topic of Africa, where we had the chance to read A Long Walk to Freedom and the fantastic Journey to Jo'burg. During Geography, we have looked at the continent and the many countries in it and in music we have sung African songs and had the chance to play Djembe drums.

We have looked at African Masks and their importance in culture. Using black paper, we used bold colours, geometric shapes and patterns to create our own, and them made our own 3D versions. We had great fun.

E2V

Last term, E2V came to visit our school and we had an engineering competition. The winning team had the chance to visit the E2V building for the day, and compete against other winning teams from other Chelmsford Schools. Mildmay did us all proud and cam in a very impressive THIRD! Well done, Poppy, Rhys, Becky, Sophia and Zac.

What a busy Autumn Term we have had in Puffin 5. We began the term by looking at Earth and Space where we joined in a Zoom meeting with a member of Nasa. She was very interesting to listen to and discussed the issue of Space Junk floating around our planet. We also had the chance to visit the wonderful Gaia exhibition in Chelmsford Cathedral.

In October, we had a visit from local engineering company, E2V. They showed us the equipment they produce, some already being used in Space, some being highly top secret!

The visitors set us a task of creating a space shuttle with the given resources, that would withstand strong vibrations. Puffin 5 were AMAZING and one group from our class won. Well done to Poppy, Becky, Esmae, Rhys and Sophia who are heading to the Grand Final at E2V Headquarters in the Spring. What a great bunch of potential engineers!

In the first half term, we had a visit from Abbie Ayre and The Science Shed. They performed a show for us to teach about the importance of trying to keep our air clean and cut down on pollution. We had a great time joining in!

This half term, our topic has been The Vikings. We had a visit from History Off The Page and we had the chance to experience life as a Viking for the day, undertaking fun tasks and activities. We looked amazing!
